Dimuon production in 800 GeV/C proton-nucleon collisions
Abstract (summary)
The reaction $p + N \to \mu\sp+\mu\sp- + X$ with 800 GeV$c\sp{-1}$ incident protons was studied at FNAL. The data contains $\sim$140 dimuons with masses between 8 and 15 GeV$c\sp{-2}$. Mass resolution was $\sim$0.25%, acceptance $\sim$0.9% and luminosity $\sim$1.4 $\times$ 10$\sp4$ pb$\sp{-1}$. Production cross-sections are calculated for the three Upsilons and the Drell-Yan continuum. No evidence for new narrow resonances was found. The data is also examined in the light of various Upsilon production mechanisms, and the gluon structure function, at high $q\sp2$ is extracted.
