INCLUSIVE HADRONIC PRODUCTION CROSS SECTIONS MEASURED IN 400 GEV PROTON-NUCLEUS COLLISIONS (HADRON, FERMI NATIONAL ACCELERATOR LABORATORY, QUARK, NEVIS LABORATORIES, HIGH TRANSVERSE MOMENTUM)
Abstract (summary)
This dissertation presents results on the production of hadrons in collisions of 400 GeV/c protons with beryllium, copper, and tungsten nuclei. The data cover the region from 5.2 to 8.0 GeV/c in the transverse momentum of the final state hadron and from 73(DEGREES) to 102(DEGREES) in the production angle (theta)('*). The restriction of the data to high x(,T) (x(,T) = 2p(,T)/SQRT.(s)) enriches the sample with events produced by hard collisions of valence quarks. Asymmetries about (theta)('*) = 90(DEGREES) reflect the presence of neutrons in the target nuclei. Measurements of the atomic weight dependence parameter (alpha) as a function of production angle are also discussed.
