Abstract (summary)
The following text focuses on a contemporary issue whose foundations relate to the observation of cultural changes, in the West, induced by the massive development of cutting-edge technologies. More precisely, we organize a staged observation, through the analysis of a novel and two American films, of the relationship that the individual (here more than ever reflected by the fictional character) maintains with the machine. The works in question are Microserfs by Douglas Coupland, Crash by David Cronenberg and Blade Runner by Ridley Scott. The theme of the machine in its broad and indefinite acceptance could not have sufficed for any study. This is why we will find in what follows a very particular attention given to the way in which it is embodied in the thought and construction of each of the chosen works.
We consider the texts offered for analysis from a postmodern perspective, on the one hand because they come from the North American cultural context of the last thirty years, and on the other hand because they are deeply marked by a number of questions associated with postmodernity, in their construction and in their content.
