Abstract (summary)

Maude Irvine Kerns (1876-1965) was first active as an artist and educator during the early decades of the twentieth century in multiple locations along the Pacific Coast, including her home state of Oregon where she was primarily based. Limited considerations of her career have yet to examine the dynamic nature of the dual roles she assumed during these critical years and therefore fail to account for her significance to the later artistic and cultural growth of the region.

This first reading of the initial phase of Kerns's lengthy career centers on her activities between approximately 1890 and 1932. Through key aspects of her biography, I establish for the first time a new standpoint through which to reassess the full scope of her career thereby bringing into better clarity Kerns's significance as an artist and educator to the artistic development of the Pacific Northwest and Coast regions in the first decades of the twentieth century.
