Abstract (summary)
(Abstract shortened by UMI.)

This research aims to study the effects of technological changes on the formation of identity at work, and more specifically on the social and professional identities of a specific category of workers: technicians.
Our hypotheses are based on three propositions. The first is that the dynamics of change in the social space of the company implements a process of transformation which leads to the structuring of new spaces of requalification and desqualification. The second is that this dynamic is not the result of technological change alone. Other factors must be taken into account in the redefinition of the technician function and in the redesign of the identity of the different sub-groups of technicians. The third hypothesis, of an analytical type, establishes a structural and cause and effect relationship between the process of transformation of requalification and desqualification spaces, their respective areas of uncertainty, and technical identity through its different technical components. , professional and social.
Technological changes are, in the final analysis, only a strategic issue around which the balance of power between different actors has crystallized, in particular technicians and decision-making bodies. other strategic issues have emerged which have contributed to creating the social conditions for institutional action, collective action and individual action. The results of the conduct and strategy of a leading social actor embodied by the company's decision-making bodies are also a determining factor. They are at the direct origin of the main social transformations highlighted by our analysis. The dynamic of transformation cannot therefore be perceived as an immanent and inevitable social production. It is not the result of an uncontrollable logic, that of technological changes, which escapes the action of the actors. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
