La poesie a l'ere de la diffusion electronique, le passage d'un genre aux pratiques discursives

Abstract (summary)

La poesie peu a peu institutionnalisee comme genre a partir de la Renaissance est, depuis la fin du XIXeme siecle, le lieu d'un profond renouvellement. Non seulement elle change, mais elle tend aussi a modifier nos conceptions de l'ecriture et de la representation du monde. Durant ce que McLuhan a appele l'ere gutenberg, il etait evident que la poesie etait une pratique liee a des formes et a des themes specifiques; aujourd'hui, elle ne peut plus etre consideree du point de vue d'un genre; c'est en tout cas ce que je tente de montrer dans ces pages. L'opposer a la prose n'est plus pertinent, la cantonner a certaines representations du monde ne rend pas compte du role qu'elle joue actuellement. Ce phenomene que j'analyse est directement lie a la chute des valeurs liees a l'humanisme. La veritable rupture semble s'etre operee apres la deuxieme guerre mondile et l'utilisation de la technologie la plus avancee pour perpetrer des crimes (je pense au nazisme mais aussi aux bombes atomiques). J'analyse les possibilites de l'ecriture poetique a partir de cette situation particuliere et troublante.

Alors que dans ce contexte plusieurs tendances s'affrontent aujourd'hui: retour a une ecriture versifiee, echec ou impossibilite de la poesie ... etc. j'ai prefere tenter de replacer la poesie dans un contexte plus large, en mettant face a face deux epoques qui encadrent celle de son institutionalisation dans le monde de l'ecrit: le Moyen Age dont la communication etait liee a un discours oral versifie et notre epoque dont les pratiques discursives relevent de plus en plus de l'electronique et d'une oralite dite secondaire. J'ai ainsi pu realiser des ponts entre ces deux epoques; ils m'ont permis de mieux comprendre la maniere dont on a represente et institutionnalise la poesie occidentale depuis la Renaissance puis de pouvoir analyser quelques enjeux actuels.

A partir d'une conception plus orale de notre monde et de ses moyens de communication (techniques audiovisuelles, autoroute de l'information, ecriture journalistiques, ... etc.) j'ai essaye de replacer ce que j'appelle plus volontiers le poeme dans une vaste pratique discursive. Bien des categories ne peuvent ainsi plus se penser de la meme maniere qu'auparavant. Le sujet ne s'oppose plus a l'objet, l'auteur au lecteur, le signe au referent, par exemple. Au regard de tous ces concepts binaires qui sautent et des enjeux de l'oralite contemporaine, il m'a semble que l'on ne peut plus releguer le poeme a quelques modes de representation du reel. Il se produit plutot dans et a travers le reel qu'il elabore simultanement: impossible de les separer, ni de delimiter leurs frontieres discursives. C'est aussi dans ce sens que le poeme fait partie et produit le vaste renouvellement de nos conceptions actuelles.

Poetry gradually institutionalized as a genre from the Renaissance is, since the end of the 19th century, the place of a profound renewal. Not only does it change, but it also tends to modify our conceptions of writing and of the representation of the world. During what McLuhan called the Gutenberg era, it was evident that poetry was a practice tied to specific forms and themes; today, it can no longer be considered from the point of view of a genre; it is in any case what I try to show in these pages. Opposing it to prose is no longer relevant, confining it to certain representations of the world does not take into account the role it currently plays. This phenomenon that I analyze is directly linked to the fall of values linked to humanism. The real break seems to have taken place after the Second World War and the use of the most advanced technology to perpetrate crimes (I am thinking of Nazism but also of atomic bombs). I analyze the possibilities of poetic writing from this particular and disturbing situation.

While in this context several trends clash today: return to a versified writing, failure or impossibility of poetry ... etc. I preferred to try to place poetry in a broader context, by putting two periods face to face which framed that of its institutionalization in the world of writing: the Middle Ages, whose communication was linked to a versified oral discourse and our time, whose discursive practices are more and more electronic and a so-called secondary orality. I was thus able to build bridges between these two eras; they allowed me to better understand the way in which Western poetry has been represented and institutionalized since the Renaissance and then to be able to analyze some current issues.

Starting from a more oral conception of our world and its means of communication (audiovisual techniques, information highway, journalistic writing, etc.) I have tried to replace what I more readily call the poem in a vast discursive practice. Many categories can no longer think of themselves in the same way as before. The subject is no longer opposed to the object, the author to the reader, the sign to the referent, for example. In view of all these binary concepts that jump and the issues of contemporary orality, it seems to me that we can no longer relegate the poem to a few modes of representation of reality. Rather, it occurs in and through the real that it elaborates simultaneously: it is impossible to separate them, nor to delimit their discursive borders. It is also in this sense that the poem forms part of and produces the vast renewal of our current conceptions.
